Rowing From a Drybox

So I have this frame with some weird geometry, and I want to ditch the seat and row from the drybox, putting a pad on it for cushioning and traction.
What I’m wondering is, do you wind up flopping around, and how much power you lose on a push stroke? At least in a seat, you can lock in and be solid. Thanks for any advice!
