‘I broke him, I broke his spirit’: Sheeraz talks TKO win over Berlanga
Hamzah Sheeraz shares some thoughts on his TKO of Edgar Berlanga and what’s to come.
Following his big knockout win over the weekend, Hamzah Sheeraz spoke to boxing reporters about his win over Edgar Berlanga and what’s to come going forward. Sheeraz, who kept a respectful disposition, shared some of these thoughts below.
Sheeraz on how he’s feeling after scoring an emphatic stoppage over Berlanga after his prior bad outing
“In life you have your good days, you have your bad days and this was a good day for me. I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I’m enjoying the victory, I am, but it’s like the whole fight all happened so fast and you get the spectacular win and then it’s hard to enjoy. I never take the time to enjoy it so I’m going to try to enjoy it now.”
On what went through is mind when he dropped Berlanga the first time
“He was hurt...The punches I was hitting him with I was hurting him, there was nothing flash happening. I think in the second or third round I hurt him. I was talking to him I told him I’d talk to him. And I broke him, I broke his spirit and that’s what got me the victory.”
On Berlanga calling him soft during the lead up to this fight
“I can differentiate that this is a sport and there was nothing personal happening in the build up to the fight on my behalf, anyway. It was a sport, he gets views, he done what he had to do. There’s nothing but respect for him. I think he’s a great guy and good luck to him in the future.”
On if a Canelo fight is on the horizon for him
“I suppose that’s what everyone’s going to talk about now so it’s about embracing it, not coming across disrespectful at all to Canelo, and just enjoying it.”
On whether he’d be interested in moving up to fight David Benavidez
“David Benavidez is a beast, bro. I sparred in LA when I was training — I was doing a camp with Jose Benavidez and I was sparring him for a whole camp a few years ago and I’ve seen David Benavidez and he’s a beast, bro. I think for now I’ll give it a miss [laughs].”
