Scotney routs Mercado to unify three world titles
Ellie Scotney is the clear class of the 122 lb division after her dominant win over Yamileth Mercado.
Ellie Scotney unified three of the four major world titles at super bantamweight tonight at Madison Square Garden, dominating against Yamileth Mercado over 10 rounds.
Scotney won by unanimous decision on scores of 98-92, 98-92, and 100-90, taking the WBC belt from Mercado and retaining the IBF and WBO titles the Brit came into the fight defending.
Scotney (11-0, 0 KO) looks like the clear class of the 122 lb ranks at this point, an excellent boxer who gave Mercado (24-4, 5 KO) fits all night, with the Mexican veteran never looking like she had any real hope of winning the fight.
Scotney’s path to undisputed would have to, at the moment, go through WBA titleholder Mayelli Flores (13-1-1, 4 KO), a 33-year-old Mexican who has held that title for a bit over a year, after beating Nazarena Romero.
Scotney dedicated her win to the late Georgia O’Connor, a 25-year-old friend and fellow boxer who passed away in May after a battle with cancer.
“Tonight, I make sure her name is remembered in Madison Square Garden,” Scotney said.
