‘I’d like to really shut him up for good’: Wood hopes for rematch with Warrington
As Leigh Woods looks to continue his fighting career, he hopes for a chance to rematch Josh Warrington.
Coming off of a TKO loss to Anthony Cacace in May, Leigh Woods explains his decision for choosing to continue fighting as opposed to walking away from the sport and hoping he can secure another fight against Josh Warrington, which he thinks is a fight that makes the most sense for both. Here’s some of what Wood had to say below.
Leigh Wood on he decision to continue on fighting following his most recent stoppage loss to Cacace
“I’m not done yet. I think it’s very important for fighters to do things on their own terms because when they do call it a day they don’t want to look back ‘I could’ve had another fight, now it’s too late. I should’ve done this.’ Nah, it’s got to be on your own terms. I’m not stupid — some people may think I am — but I’m not an idiot. I’m better than that. Don’t got to make excuses, just go out and show I’m better than that.
“For me the feeling [after the Cacace loss] was I felt that fire inside and thought ‘I’m better than that. I can do better than that.’ I’m just going to go do better than that, basically. No excuses, the better man won on the night. I couldn’t really done much more on the night, looking back at it is just the things I’ve changed, adjustments I made — of course — but that’s boxing. You’ve got to do it on the night.”
On how highly he rates Cacace
“I rate him as very underrated. Once you’re in there with him he’s long and I think he gave me a lot of respect on the night for my power which made it very hard to land, like I couldn’t nail him with something clean. He was, not going to say negative, but he was on the back foot in spells and ‘f-ck, here we go again, cut him off then.’ Then moments I was expecting wasn’t quite there and, yeah, he’s better than he looks when you’re in there with him, for sure.”
On where he wants to go from here
“I think there’s a few fight that could be made. I think the Warrington fight for me makes sense, not just for me but possibly for him as well. But, you know, got a really good relationship with Frank [Warre] as well so I’ll be talking to him in a few weeks, got something penciled in with him so he may give me an offer for something.
“The Warrington fight, I think, makes sense for both of us and I’d like to really shut him up for good, you know, how he went off for the last fight and there’s genuine need of it. I don’t really like the guy so that’s probably the best possibility, the best option for both of us really.”
