Jaime Munguia’s rematch victory over Bruno Surace is now in question after a post-fight drug test came back positive

Jaime Munguia’s redemption arc just hit a serious roadblock, as Jake Donovan and Mike Coppinger report that the former champion failed a post-fight Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) drug test for exogenous testosterone metabolites after this month’s decision victory over Bruno Surace.

“Exogenous” means the testosterone came from an outside source as opposed to Munguia’s (45-2, 35 KO) own endocrine system. This is not to be confused with clenbuterol, the PED prevalent in Mexican cattle that produced the “tainted beef” excuse.

Per both aforementioned sources, he has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample.

Munguia’s four-fight 2024 saw him outgun John Ryder in January, get thoroughly outclassed by Canelo four months later for his first official defeat, hammer Erik Bazinyan into submission in a genuinely solid comeback victory, then suffer a shocking one-punch knockout loss at the hands of the historically feather-fisted Surace.

Munguia looked markedly improved in their rematch, showing a level of patience and thoughtfulness we’ve wanted to see from him for years, but there’s a big ol’ asterisk on that win now. We’ll update you with any new developments.
