‘It would be good to settle the score’: Taylor not ruling out trilogy match with Catterall
Josh Taylor says he’s like a third fight with Jack Catterall but is taking his own path.
Former 140 lb undisputed champion Josh Taylor is set to return to action this Saturday, but he’ll now be competing at welterweight as he’s set to face Ekow Essuman in Glasgow. Speaking to ESPN, Taylor says that he still has world title aspirations despite having lost his last two fights.
Taylor believes this move up in weight will suit him because he’s now fighting at his ‘natural weight’ and says he’s feeling tremendous heading into this fight. And while he doesn’t want to look past Essuman, Taylor can’t help but acknowledge his goals of snagging another major belt.
Most observers will believe Taylor’s best days are clearly behind him after a highly controversial win over Jack Catterall, followed by a comprehensive loss to Teofimo Lopez, and another loss where he officially fell to Catterall in their rematch last year.
Taylor is more than willing to consider a third fight against Catterall if it presents itself, but says it’s not a fight that he’s desperately chasing.
“I was ready to go for a third one but they weren’t interested because they thought he was going to get a world title, but he got beat by [Arnold Barboza Jr.]. “I’m on my own path now. I’m looking to become a two-weight world champion. If the fight comes back around and it’s tasty enough in terms of numbers wise, then I’ll entertain it because it’s one apiece and it would be good to settle the score.”
Taylor seemingly has a tough hill to climb however, as it’s been years since Taylor has looked the part of a world champion and he’ll need to show a dramatic improvement in this outing to even build towards that kind of momentum.
