Ferdaws Najibi made history by reaching the Asian Youth Boxing Championship final, securing silver and competing for the gold medal.
Afghanistan’s boxer Ferdaws Najibi has secured at least a silver medal by reaching the final of the 2025 Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Competing in the 80 kg weight class, Najibi delivered an impressive performance, defeating his opponent from Saudi Arabia to earn a spot in the final match.
This achievement marks a historic moment, as Najibi becomes the first Afghanistan’s boxer to reach the final of the Asian Youth Championships held in Sri Lanka. His progress has been widely celebrated as a significant step forward for boxing in Afghanistan.
Najibi is set to face the Kazakhstani finalist on Friday, May 23, in a highly anticipated match that could earn him a gold medal. If successful, the bout will further cement his place in Afghanistan sporting history.
Even securing the silver medal is a major milestone for Afghanistan boxing, demonstrating the country’s growing presence in international competitions despite many challenges.
It is worth noting that in 2024, boxer Qais Alizada also made it to the final of the Asian Under-22 Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan, where he became the runner-up in the 80 kg category after defeating an Indian opponent in the semifinals.
The Asian Boxing Championship is being held with the participation of 23 countries, including Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Australia, and others in the region. Given the high technical level of the competition, the advancement of Afghanistan athlete to the finals is considered a remarkable achievement.
