Canelo Alvarez is once again undisputed super middleweight champion.

Canelo Alvarez is now a two-time undisputed champion at super middleweight, following tonight’s uneventful win over an action-avoidant William Scull.

Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KO) won the fight on scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 119-109, and for once, it’s the wider score that will probably reflect what most observers saw, rather than being a case of a judge scoring it too wide for the heavy favorite and superstar.

Canelo, 34, really didn’t do much of anything in this fight, but what he did was more than we saw from the 33-year-old Scull, who may have thought he was putting on some master boxing display, but was mainly just dancing away from any sort of physical involvement with Alvarez.

Scull never truly gave the impression that he was looking to win the fight, but this wasn’t exactly unexpected. It’s also yet another fight from the last two nights of “big time boxing” — following Garcia vs Romero and Haney vs Ramirez on Friday in New York — that could be described as dreadful to watch.

Those three fights have made for a genuinely historic bad weekend of boxing, with Canelo and Scull combining to throw 445 punches over 12 rounds, setting a new record for fights tracked by CompuBox over the last 40 years. Garcia vs Romero is now in fourth place on that list, with Haney vs Ramirez in sixth.

“He came just to survive, to go the 12 rounds,” Canelo said of Scull. “It’s a boring fight. He didn’t try to win, just tried to survive. I hate those kind of fighters. ... But it’s OK, we won, and we’re two times undisputed champion.”

It was also made official immediately after the fight that Canelo will face Terence “Bud” Crawford on September 12 in Las Vegas.

“Crawford is one of the best out there, and I like to share the ring with that kind of fighter. It’s my pleasure,” Canelo said. “Everybody has been asking for the fight.”

“Everything happens for a reason, and there’s a reason why I’m here. I’m going to show the world what greatness looks like,” Crawford said. “(Canelo) did what he had to do (tonight), with what was in front of him. I’m the best. That’s why everybody’s going to come and watch.”
