Reito Tsutsumi secures win on professional debut!

0 1
On Friday in Times Square fight fans had the chance to see the professional debut of former amateur standout Reito Tsutsumi (1-0) [堤麗斗], who got off to a winning start in front of a global audience, as he overcame the spirited Levale Whittington (1-3-1, 1) over 6 rounds.

From the off Tsutsumi looked sharp, hungry to impress and aggressive, using his sharp jab to press the action and force Whittington backwards, setting up his body shots and crisp combinations. To his credit Whittington wasn’t there to fold, as some had expected, and instead he showed some genuine determination and guts, not just standing there and taking shots but trying to counter, and pick his moments to fire back.

Round after round it was clear that Tsutusmi wasn’t the average debutant, but instead an extremely polished former amateur, with a pro-ready style that combined body shots, hooks, aggression, jabs and pressure. His footwork was on point, his power shots were very clean, and his defense was also excellent for the most part. Most notably he was keeping up a high tempo every round, for all 6 rounds, showing off a very good output, whilst dominating the action against a very game opponent.

As the fight went on it was clear Whittington was much, much better, than a typical 1-2 fighter, and whilst he likely knew he was there for Tsutusmi to look good against, he didn’t miss out on making himself look good at the same time. In fact if anything Tsutsumi did what was expected, and dominated the action, but Whittington enhanced his standing in the sport, and hopefully gets some more pay days on the back of this.

After 6 rounds the judges had the 60-54, twice, and 58-56, all in favour of Tsutsumi, who made the absolute most of a showcase position on one of the biggest weekends of the year. He was the rightful winner, though we can’t help but feel that Whittington did more than just score a moral victory, and instead he likely secured himself some very good future pay days on the back of his loss.
