Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez could face fellow super flyweight champion Phumelela Cafu this summer in Texas

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez’s first super flyweight unification bout will reportedly land in his native Texas, as Keith Idec brings word that the WBC champion will meet WBO titlist Phumelela Cafu atop a July 19th DAZN show in Frisco.

After taking out Juan Francisco Estrada and Pedro Guevara in 2024, Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KO) spent the first chunk of this year angling for a showdown with WBA champ Fernando “Pumita” Martinez, while Cafu (11-0-3, 8 KO) looked poised to battle the legendary Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in his inaugural defense. Instead, Martinez wound up successfully renegotiating a rematch with Kazuto Ioka and Gonzalez elected to move to 118, setting the stage for this matchup.

It looks like a good one. Cafu pulled off an impressive upset of Kosei Tanaka last October and, while most rightly view Rodriguez as a pound-for-pound mainstay, represents one of his toughest challenges at super flyweight.

Per Idec, Diego Pacheco (23-0, 18 KO) will face Trevor McCumby (28-1, 21 KO) in the co-feature. This one’s more than a little underwhelming; Pacheco’s team twice pulled him from proposed eliminators with Christian Mbilli in favor of McCumby, whose career highlight saw him give Caleb Plant a tougher-than-expected out en route to a stoppage loss last September.
