Gervonta Davis has suggested he could soon retire, but hiatus from boxing is more likely.

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is set to face Lamont Roach tomorrow night but he’s also publicly acknowledged that he’s eyeing the end of his professional fighting career. Here in this interview on ESPN’s First Take, Tank actually suggests that he’ll more likely soon take a hiatus from the sport rather than walk away altogether. Here’s some of what Tank had to say below.

Tank on why he’s fighting Lamont Roach of all people

“He’s a world champion himself. He’ coming up in weight, dare to be great. We fought before so it’s history in that. It’s two guys that’s trying to be great.”

On his history with Roach

“I don’t know him that personal, but through boxing we came up together and things like that, we had similar friends and things like that in the boxing world. We fought before so I’m familiar with his fighting style. It’s been years since I fought him so I don’t know, but it’s cool to have someone from that area…get us both in the ring and share that arena together on the pro level.”

On where he rates himself as a P4P fighter

“I really don’t pay attention to that because I’m still in the mix so I just got to keep my head grounded, stay grounded. My whole goal was always to go out there and put on a great performance like every night. So I can’t really say right now because I’m still in the mix, like I said, but hopefully when it’s all said and done I’ll be one of those top, top great fighters.”

On how much longer he sees himself fighting

“[The end] is close, for sure. I don’t know, it’s just a little draining. I just want to step back for a little bit and just focus on me, personally. I feel like I’ve been doing this for some time now and I just want to give myself a break and focus on me as a human being, me as a father, me as a son and things of that nature.”

On who he’s targeting next if he beats Roach

“It’s not no specific name I would say that’s good for me. I feel like me sharing the ring with all them guys (Lomachenko, Stevenson, Garcia, etc.) would be big. Hopefully in the future probably we’ll get ‘em, if not, so be it.”
