Thai amateur legend convicted of attempted rape

0 3
Earlier today news broke from Thailand that former Olympic hero Somrak Kamsing (สมรักษ์ คำสิงห์;), also known as Somluck Kamsing and Pimaranlek Sitaran (พิมพ์อรัญเล็ก ศิษย์อรัญ), had been convicted of a serious sexual crime in his homeland, and is now serving jail time having been sentenced on Thursday.

Kamsing was a former Muay and amateur boxer, who made history in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics, when he won Thailand’s first ever Boxing gold medal, doing so at Featherweight. Notably he defeated Bulgarian Serafim Todorov in the final, the man who had beaten Floyd Mayweather Jr in the semi-final, to create his historic moment, almost 30 years ago. His amateur success also saw him winning gold medals at the Asian Games, the SEA Games and the Asian Championships, marking himself as one of the greatest Thai amateur boxers in history.

Following his boxing career Kamsing has remained in the public eye. He has taken part in a number of fights, some under special mixed rules with massive side bets, as well as acting in a number of movies and recording several music tracks.

Sadly however his out of the ring activities have caused him some real trouble, including a bankruptcy charge in 2018 and then incident for which he has been convicted.

The conviction related to actions from December 2023 (reported in Thai press as being EITHER December 9th or December 10th), and on January 23rd this year, more than a year after the fact, he was convicted of a 4 crimes in Khon Kaen Province. Those were they include “the charge of jointly abducting a minor over 15 but not over 18 years old from his parents or guardians under Section 318 of the Criminal Code, the charge of jointly taking a person over 15 but not over 18 years old for indecent purposes under Section 283 of the Criminal Code, the charge of committing indecent acts against a person over 15 years old by using force and violence under Section 278 of the Criminal Code, and the charge of attempting to rape another person by using force and violence under Section 76 and Section 80 of the Criminal Code”.

As a result of his conviction he has been sentenced to 3 years, 1 month and 10 days in prison (oddly reported in various Thai press sources as 2 years 13 months and 10 days) plus being ordered to pay both the victim and the victim's guardians.

The Thai press have reported that Kamsing was set to be sentenced to a longer term, of f 4 years and 8 months in prison, though as he provided information that was useful to the trial it was reduced by 1/3. As for the compensation, 50,000 baht has been awarded to the family of the victim, "Ms A", whilst 120,000 baht has been awarded to the victim herself, with a 5% per annum on the compensation.

Kamsing was a co-defendant in the case, with the other defendant having their charges dismissed. The other defendant was said to have picked up Kamsing and “Ms A” and was originally charged with "jointly abducting a minor and jointly taking another person to commit indecent acts."

Kamsing's lawyers have stated they will appear and have applied for bail, and are looking to post bail at 400,000 baht
