UFC on ESPN 28 weigh-in results: Two fights canceled, though headliners cleared

LAS VEGAS – MMA Junkie was on scene and reporting live from Friday’s official UFC on ESPN 28 fighter weigh-ins, where a pair of fights were scratched during the session.

The weigh-ins took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The same venue hosts Saturday’s card, which airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Among those weighing in were Uriah Hall (17-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) and Sean Strickland (23-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC), who meet in the middleweight main event. Each made weight without issue.

The same could not be said for former UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano (4-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who weighed 143 pounds for her planned bout with Wu Yanan (11-4 MMA, 1-3 UFC). As a result, that fight was canceled.

Additionally Ronnie Lawrence (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was not able to weigh in, with officials citing medical concerns, and his bout with Trevin Jones (13-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was also canceled.

Phil Rowe (7-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was 173.5 pounds for his welterweight matchup with Orion Cosce (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Rowe was fined 20 percent of his purse, but the bout will go on as scheduled.
