Lopez-Kambosos off for Aug. 14, likely moving to Sept. 11 Triller card
Triller could be making moves, including a potential Morales-Barrera exhibition.
UPDATE (June 24, 2:45 am ET): Ryan O’Hara is reporting at The Ring that Lopez-Kambosos indeed will not happen on Aug. 14, so the plan does appear now, as Lance Pugmire reported, the fight will move to the Sept. 11 Triller Fight Club card.
Aug. 14 is shaping up to be an extremely busy day and night of boxing. Matchroom have a card on DAZN, Golden Boy have a card on DAZN, Showtime have Donaire-Casimero, ESPN will reportedly have a third Franco-Moloney fight, and Triller have their rescheduled Lopez-Kambosos PPV.
But in the immortal words of Lee Corso, NOT so fast, my friend! Lopez-Kambosos is not set in stone for that date, and Lance Pugmire of The Athletic reports there’s “a likelihood” the bout will be moved to Oscar De La Hoya’s “comeback” exhibition show on Sept. 11, also a Triller production.
You’ll recall, though it feels forever ago now that all issues between Lopez and Top Rank are settled, that Triller put in a ridiculously high purse bid to “win” the rights to the Lopez-Kambosos fight back in February. They obviously overpaid for the fight — like, by a lot — and with it having no buzz and already being moved from June 5 to June 19, and then postponed when Lopez tested positive for COVID on fight week, it feels like more of an albatross than anything at this point.
Pugmire also reports that there is a chance Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera could do an exhibition on the De La Hoya show, for what that’s worth to you.
None of this is official, of course, and we’ll have to see what happens, but it might be worth it for Triller to just stack the bad idea onto the show that might actually make some money.
