Why UFC on ESPN 22 winner Tracy Cortez was 'really frustrated' by half-pound weight miss

LAS VEGAS – Tracy Cortez’s weekend almost went according plan.

The UFC flyweight prospect picked up her third UFC win and extended her overall winning streak to nine after out-pointing veteran Justine Kish on the main card of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 22.

Despite taking home the victory, Cortez (9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) didn’t make her full purse as she had to forfeit 20 percent due to a weight miss. Cortez weighed in half a pound over the non-title flyweight limit, registering 126.5 pounds on the scale.

Cortez said the miss was out of her hands.

“So I was point-5 off, and they normally give us an hour to cut the weight, but they didn’t clear me,” Cortez told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at the UFC Apex. “The doctor didn’t let me cut the half-a-pound.

“He checked me out, and he wasn’t OK with me cutting the rest of the weight. I could’ve cut it, I could’ve peed it, but he didn’t let me.”

Cortez was counting on that hour to make weight but unfortunately the doctor officiating the weigh-ins didn’t allow her to continue her cut.

“I thought I was going to get that extra hour, so I was very confident I was going to make 126 on the dot,” Cortez said. “So when the doctor didn’t clear me, my coach fought and said that it’s point-5 pounds. I’m fine, I was walking, and I did everything he asked me. I was just fine, and he still didn’t clear me. Protocols, which I have no other choice but respect.”

Cortez said if she would’ve known that she wasn’t going to be allowed a second attempt, she would’ve used the time remaining at weigh-ins to cut the half pound, as she stepped on the scale 20 minutes before the deadline.

“I would’ve cut it 100 percent,” Cortez explained. “I wouldn’t have jumped on the scale to miss weight with point-5 off. I would’ve never done that. I’ve never missed weight in my life and my career, so I was really frustrated.”

Regardless, the 27-year-old remains unbeaten in the UFC and is building momentum. Cortez doesn’t have a name in mind for her return, but she hopes the UFC keeps her busy.

“Right now I just want to go home and spend some time with my family and see how I feel and I recover, but I do want to be active,” Cortez said. “I want to stay in the flyweight division and make a name for myself here.”
