Benavidez: Dream scenario is Charlo, Plant, then Canelo

Benavidez is currently slated to take on Ronald Ellis, but has hopes for some much bigger fights afterwards.

Former super middleweight titleholder David Benavidez continues to talk about his plans for the division which now firmly hosts Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez. Talking to TMZ, Benavidez insists he’s still looking forward to an eventual fight against Canelo despite recently stating his belief that Canelo would rather vacate his WBC world title than be forced to face him as a mandatory.

“I’ll knock [Canelo] out! I’ll stop him! It takes a lot of balls to say that but the reason why I’m saying that is because I really fully, truly believe I’m the one that can beat and stop Canelo. The dream scenario is fight with [Jermall] Charlo right after and then Caleb Plant and then Canelo. That’s the dream scenario but the reality of making that happen, is very hard.”

Benavidez would continue by saying that Canelo hasn’t really been pushed as of late because too many of his opponents are coming into the fight scared to really make a go of it, giving him far too much respect for them to be successful. But that’s not a problem Benavidez says he would suffer from, explaining how he would go into that fight with a strong desire to make a name for himself.

For now Benavidez says he still expects Canelo to avoid him for as long as possible, but thinks that eventually fans will demand the fight, putting a lot of pressure on Canelo to step up to the plate — especially if Canelo has taken out the rest of the super middleweight field by then. Canelo, though, has largely reached the point to where he can pick and choose who he wants to fight and when, and hasn’t been shy about bouncing around in weight to make it happen.

If Benavidez truly hopes to get the fight he wants, he could do himself a favor by staying dedicated, not missing weight, not getting stripped, and not getting popped for illegal substances.
