Matt Brown says retiring after Condit fight is ‘not out of the picture’

Welterweight veteran Matt Brown could hang his gloves up following his UFC Fight Island 7 fight on January 16.

Recently turned 40-year-old Matt Brown is close to calling it a career. Going into his 40th professional mixed martial arts against none other than former UFC interim champion Carlos Condit, ‘The Immortal’ is sure his retirement is not too far away, but prefers not to make any promises just yet.

In a media day session with Combate, Brown pointed out how there are other aspects of life he has been missing out on due to his career. As hard as calling it a day may be for the veteran, Matt also wants to dedicate more of his time to his family and managing his business.

“It’s not out of the picture that this might be my last fight,” Brown said. “Once again, I’ll go home and think about it. I have three kids, businesses, that kind of thing. That’s the hard part of life. Fighting is the easy part, to be honest. I miss my kids. That’s what really gets me down, to be away from my kids all the time. They don’t deserve it.”

Paired up against a fellow vicious finisher and veteran of the sport, Brown is excited to share the Octagon with Condit. A fan of the ‘Natural Born Killer’ since the WEC days, Matt shows nothing but respect for Carlos ahead of their match.

“I’ve wanted this fight for a long time,” Brown said. “I’ve always admired him. He was in the WEC before I was in the UFC. I used to watch him and I was a fan, I’ve always been a big fan of his. On Saturday, I’ll put that aside and fight him, and then I’ll continue to be a fan of his afterwards. I wish nothing but the best for him.”

In his last outing, Matt Brown (22-17) got knocked out by prospect Miguel Baeza, back in May 2020. The defeat snapped a two-fight winning streak for the 40-year-old, who knocked out both Ben Saunders and Diego Sanchez, respectively in December 2019 and November 2017.

Now, Matt Brown is expected to take on Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Island 7, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on January 16. The card is scheduled to be headlined by a featherweight bout between former champion Max Holloway and top contender Calvin Kattar.
