Jacobs eyes fight against Smith or Saunders

Jacobs is coming off a stoppage win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Daniel Jacobs has already dipped his toe in the super middleweight pond with a stoppage win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last December, but is now looking for the creme of the crop. During the most recent segment of Matchroom’s The Lockdown Tapes podcast, Jacobs talks about wanting to make it to the Hall of Fame one day and that fights against the champions make the most sense for him.

“I want to be a Hall of Famer one day and winning a belt in this weight division is what I need to do to achieve that,” said Jacobs. “You are going to see the best version of Daniel Jacobs now and I’m looking at the likes of Callum and Billy Joe, both of those fights make sense.”

Both Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders have themselves been honing-in on a potential fight against Canelo Alvarez, but with the way things have been panning out, Saunders, who was the presumptive May opponent for Canelo, just might miss out altogether as a third Canelo-Golovkin fight is being targeted for this fall. That could open a door of opportunity for Jacobs here, who also mentions his ongoing rift with Gabe Rosado as a possibility.

“It only makes sense for me coming into this division to fight the very best,” said Jacobs. “I want to be able to prove that I am the best. As well as wanting the big fights, there is also the fights where you want to settle the debt which is what I have always said about that little nag Gabe Rosado. If we were to fight in New York or Philadelphia then great, it’s onwards from there. He is just a hater who wants my position.”

With the current shutdown of boxing it’s still not exactly clear when operations will resume in full force but Jacobs says he would like to get in a fight this year, if possible. At age 33 Jacobs is probably nearing the end of his physical prime so likely wants to take his chances where he can get them.
