DC: As soon as I’m out of there, Cain will be the champ

UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is expecting a quick rise to the top for returning teammate Cain Velasquez.

After almost a three-year absence, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will be making his return this weekend against Francis Ngannou. And as early as now, close friend and teammate Daniel Cormier is already expecting big things.

On Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, Cormier gave a little update on where Velasquez is at in terms of preparation, while at the same time making a fearless forecast.

“You’re going to see vintage, you’re going to see the best,” Cormier said (transcript via BJPenn.com). “Nothing has changed. He is still as good, still as fast. He still can wrestle, as well. You have to remember, this whole time off he’s been helping me the whole time.

“He will be the champ, very, very soon. As soon as I’m out of there he will be the champ. The only issue with that is, the UFC has to know, now Cain is healthy and they can trust him because he will be around for a while.”

Cormier planned for his retirement to fall on his 40th birthday on March 20th, but he might actually postpone it due to a lingering injury, as predicted by his coach Javier Mendez.
