Video: Boxer loses point for three-punch combo to the groin

0 2

Azat Hovhannisyan has earned first-ballot consideration for the Low Blow Hall of Fame.

There are some legendary fights and fighters known for low blows. In boxing, Andrew Golota caused a literal riot with his repeated low blow attacks against Riddick Bowe, In MMA, who could forget various Cheick Kongo fights, or Eric Prindle’s literal axe kick to smash Thiago Santos’ nether regions?

Enter Azat Hovhannisyan.

Buried on the undercard of Saturday night’s Golden Boy Boxing card on DAZN, former 122 lbs title challenger Hovhannisyan (16-3, 13 KOs) took on Lolito Sonsona (22-3-4, 9 KOs) in what became a ball-smashing clinic by Azat.

In round one, Hovhannisyan was warned for low blows. He was unmoved by this warning, and was deducted a point for a punch that was juuuuust below the belt.

In round four, Hovhannisyan finished off his testicular assault in jaw-dropping fashion. As you’ll see in the video below, the Armenian uncorked a vicious three-punch combo to the groin, forcing the Filipino to turn away and eventually drop to the canvas in pain.

Despite Hovhannisyan’s complete confusion that he might have done something wrong, another point was deducted. Hovhannisyan wound up knocking Sonsona out with actual legal punches in the ensuing frame. Nevertheless, Hovhannisyan has etched his name into stone for the Low Blow Hall of Fame.

While you’re here, the actual main event saw 9-to-1 underdog Andrew Cancio stop WBA super-featherweight champion Alberto Machado in the fourth round, in what will hold up as one of the biggest upsets in boxing this year. Cancio is a full-time construction technician who nearly quit the sport, and now he’s knocked off one of the world’s best 130 lbs fighters.
