Poirier ‘needs clarity’ on future, wants fight with Ferguson

Dustin Poirier is frustrated with the UFC lightweight title picture, and instead wants a fight with Tony Ferguson.

UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier is losing patience with the upper echelon of 155-pounds, and wants a fight with former interim champion Tony Ferguson.

It comes after the Nevada State Atheltic Commission made the decision on Monday to delay the hearing of Khabib Nurmagomedov for his post-fight brawl with Conor McGregor after UFC 229 in October.

“I just need clarity on what’s next for me,” Poirier told MMAjunkie after expressing his frustration and calling out Ferguson for a fight on social media.

Poirier (24-5, 1NC) had to pull out of a fight with Nate Diaz in October due to a hip injury, and the fight was scrapped. Only suffering one defeat since returning to lightweight in 2015, Poirier has picked up wins against the likes of former champions Anthony Pettis and Eddie Alvarez.

“I want to fight Tony, and if it’s not Tony, good for Tony, he’s (expletive) more than earned his shot at Khabib.” Poirier said. “He’s definitely next in line for the world championship. He’s ahead of me. I agree.

“But if that’s not going to happen, let’s let the two best guys who are available go at it. Or let me and Conor go at it.”

McGregor and Poirier first met back in late 2014, when the Irishman snapped Poirier’s winning streak by knocking him out in the first round. Both featherweights at the time of that fight, they are now two of the top contenders at 155-pounds making a rematch between them seem likely.

“It’s a fun fight for the fans and for both of our careers, and it makes sense.” Poirier said. “But I don’t know what makes sense in this (expletive) company any more.”
