Road FC 49 highlights: Kazuyuki Fujita wins by north-south choke
Road FC 49 saw Kazuyuki Fujita finish in a rare win on the South Korean card that was all about finishes.
This weekend, Road Fighting Championship put on quite the show despite only six fights at the Grand Walkerhill Seoul in South Korea.
Out of six fights, five were finishes. The most notable finish was Kazuyuki Fujita’s choke of Justin Morton. Before his last two fights (the other was this May against Handong Kong), Fujita hadn’t scored a win in a decade.
Granted, some of those fights were nonsense. Like being put inside the ring with horsemeat -era Alistair Overeem, or when Road FC stuck him in the cage with an actual supernova.
Nonetheless, Fujita has had a very storied career dating back to the early days of Pride. He started out as a ‘Japanese wrestler with a hard head’ — earning him the nickname Ol’ Ironhead — but eventually became a quality heavyweight journeyman; managing what was the impossible task at the time of giving Fedor quite the scare. His opponent this weekend received more than a scare.

In other FC news, Chinese featherweight Zhenyue Huang made quick work of Thailand’s Thirayut Khaorat, stepping in hard with a deft right jab that plunked Khaorat right to the canvas.

On a side note, can American fighters please take cues from Koreans re: nicknames? I mention this because Mu Bae Choi was also fighting. ‘The Heavy Tank of Busan’ also made quick work of his opponent, Anding Ma. Ma was gassed enough before the first round was over that a simple trip bounced his head off the canvas. The rest was history.

Road FC has had better shows, but for hardcore fans feening for MMA with the current UFC break, Road FC 49 was a solid substitute.
