Canelo aiming to knock out Golovkin

The Mexican superstar says he’s looking to do damage against GGG in their rematch.

Canelo Alvarez told media on a conference call on Wednesday that he’s looking to knock out Gennady Golovkin when the two meet in a highly-anticipated rematch on September 15 in Las Vegas.

“From the beginning, I will work him to look for that KO,” Alvarez said. “That’s what I’ll be doing from the very first round, and that’s why I’m training and I’m mentally prepared to do that. Obviously, you know, that’s the way I want this fight to end by knockout, and for them to raise my hand after that knockout victory.”

Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KO) and Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KO) went to a controversial draw last September in their first meeting. Alvarez has said repeatedly that while Golovkin has good power, it’s “nothing out of this world,” and he’s said he gained confidence that he can take Golovkin’s punch.

That could lead to a more aggressive Alvarez next month, or this could just be talk and a good headline. I wouldn’t expect Canelo, a smart boxer-puncher, to suddenly box recklessly against someone as dangerous as Golovkin, but if he feels there are soft spots, he could look to exploit them against his older opponent.
