O’Sullivan set for Canelo-GGG undercard
He could face David Lemieux, and Golden Boy is aiming to put another world title fight on the card, as well.
Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan will be part of the September 15 HBO pay-per-view card headlined by the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch, and Golden Boy is looking to use their second undercard slot on a world title fight, according to ESPN.
“O’Sullivan is definitely going to be on and we’re working on the opponent now. There are a couple of big names that we’re looking at but we want to make a significant fight with O’Sullivan. I don’t know what the GGG side is going to do (with its undercard fight) but we want to do a world title fight as well on the undercard. So there are some other fights we’re looking at.”
O’Sullivan (28-2, 20 KO) is an entertaining middleweight with a pair of losses coming in his bigger fights, against Billy Joe Saunders in 2013 and Chris Eubank Jr in 2015, but he’s won six straight and created a little buzz for himself when he beat Antoine Douglas on HBO in December of last year, on the Saunders-David Lemieux undercard.
Speaking of Lemieux (39-4, 33 KO), he says he wants the fight with O’Sullivan, but that might require Spike to move up to 168 or a catchweight, as Lemieux has reportedly — though this has happened before — decided he finally just can’t make middleweight anymore after missing weight for a fight with Karim Achour on May 26.
So we’ll see who’s across the ring from O’Sullivan on September 15 in due time, but he’ll be on the pay-per-view card.
