Colby Covington says he’ll have words with Joe Rogan in Chicago

Top welterweight contender Colby Covington seems intent on keeping his beef with Joe Rogan alive, putting the UFC commentator on blast for his ‘biased’ announcing and his Tae Kwon Do experience.

Colby Covington seems bound and determined to follow his heel persona wherever it happens to lead. Now engaged in multiple public beefs on multiple fronts, the top welterweight contender doesn’t want to let any of them go, even if it’s a war of words with someone he’s never going to get the chance to fight.

That’s almost assuredly the case with Joe Rogan, who fell into Covington’s sweeping path of alpha posturing after cautioning the American Top Team fighter against going after former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

“Jon Jones is going to be in front of you one day,” Rogan said on a recent episode of his Joe Rogan Experience podcast. “You’ve got to be careful, watch your f**cking words. You’re going to get slapped in the face by a guy who can kill you with his hands. That’s a bad move.”

This isn’t a recent development, between Covington and Jones. The two men used to be roommates back at Iowa Central Community College, and Covington has taken public shots at the UFC star going back as far as 2014.

So when Rogan stepped into the middle of it, Covington threatened to make his involvement physical. “He might be commentating that Chicago card,” Covington said on a May 3rd interview with BJPenn.com Radio, “so that’s kind of hypocritical of him to say something like that because when he’s talking about me, we might be face to face. I might just have to slap him.”

Rogan quickly backed off, explaining that he was ‘just talking shit’ and even making it clear that he likes Covington and what he’s doing. But apparently Rogan’s explanations have fallen on deaf ears. Covington was once again on BJPenn.com Radio recently, where he reiterated his threat to Rogan. Albeit with slightly less implied violence (transcript via MMA Mania).

“His little mouth was trying to run and say things when he shouldn’t have an opinion,” Covington said. “You’ve never been in an Octagon, you don’t have any experience fighting. He thinks he has a say in everything and he’s a biased announcer as it is.”

“Just because you do these little Tae Kwon Do tournaments and you can’t even get first place in those, doesn’t mean you can come talk to the ‘King of Chaos,’ AKA the new welterweight king on June 9th. I got something to say to him and I’m going to say something when I see him face-to-face in Chicago.”

Covington faces Rafael Dos Anjos for the interim welterweight title on June 9th in Chicago, Illinois. The UFC 225 PPV card is set to feature a middleweight title fight in the main event, as champion Robert Whittaker rematches challenger Yoel Romero. A women’s featherweight top contender bout between Holly Holm and Megan Anderson is also scheduled for the card, along with the return of former pro-wrestler CM Punk.
