Canelo-Golovkin does 1.3M buys on PPV

0

The fight did good numbers, but was it what you expected?

As is being reported by WBN and a few of other outlets, the middleweight showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin topped out at about 1.3 million buys on pay-per-view.

Anything over a million is a good number for a notable fight, but to keep things in perspective, this fight only beat out Canelo-Chavez Jr. by about 300,000 buys — and this was a much better fight on paper.

I should also note that this fight did take place just a few weeks after the big Mayweather-McGregor PPV, and that could’ve perhaps taken at least a little steam out of the buy rate for this one, but I suppose we’ll never know for certain. Either way, 1.3M buys is a good number for a elite level fight in the sport. It’s also much, much better than how both Ward-Kovalev PPVs performed combined.

For Golovkin this is by far the biggest selling event of his career. And for Canelo, this is the best he’s done since fighting Miguel Cotto back in late 2015, a fight that did roughly 900,000 buys.

Both Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, when taking into account the live gate money, are expected to walk away with a hefty sum, so a rematch that’s currently being negotiated is obviously a top priority for both fighters.
