Seldin fails drug test, June 15 fight canceled

Cletus Seldin has tested positive for extremely high levels of testosterone

Celtus Seldin, and undefeated welterweight, has just tested positive for dramatically high levels of testosterone which has forced his June 15th fight against Mike Arnaoutis at the Paramount in Huntington, New York to be canceled, reports ESPN.

Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing said that he’s likely to scrap the entire card now that the Seldin, the popular local attraction, will not longer be on it.

Selin (19-0, 16 KOs) provided a May 23 urine sample to VADA as part of the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program. But according to a letter from the president of VADA, Dr. Margaret Goodman, Selin’s urine came back with some atypical findings.

Selin’s testosterone to epitestosterone ratio was a stunning 21.02 to 1, far beyond the 4 to 1 maximum threshold according to the World Anti-Doping Agency. And as a means of comparison, heavyweight Shannon Briggs was just busted for a 7.89 to 1 ratio, and this nearly triples that!

A second supplemental carbon isotope ratio test revealed another adverse finding that "indicates results are consistent with administration of a steroid."

It turns out that steroid would be synthetic testosterone, which promoter Joe DeGuardia acknowledges as part of hormone therapy that Selin has received.

"Cletus has had testosterone therapy," DeGuardia said. "It's not like he's trying to hide anything or gain an unfair advantage. He wrote it on the sheet when VADA came to test him."

According to DeGuardia, Selin’s trainer knew about the hormone therapy and called the New York State Athletic commission in April to inform them that Seldin was under doctor’s care. But after Seldin reportedly didn’t hear word back from NYSAC about whether he could continue treatments, he stopped them all together on April 27.

That my not be a saving grace though, as this is Seldin’s second infraction with failed drug tests. He previously tested positive for elevated testosterone in a February 1 sample, along with testing positive for anabolic steroid stanozolol. The WBC suspended Seldin from participating in any of its sanctioned fights for six months because of those results, but because this June 15 fight wasn’t sanctioned by the WBC, that suspension didn’t bar him from fighting here. This newly failed drug test, however, will.
