Kevin Kisner wins the 2017 Dean & DeLuca Invitational

0

Jon Rahm made a charge and Jordan Spieth gave his title a defense a good run, but in the end, one of the Tour’s most reliable competitors earned the win at Colonial.

Over the course of a relatively short PGA Tour career, Kevin Kisner’s been there plenty. A near miss at the 2015 Players after dropping a playoff to Rickie Fowler. A playoff loss at this year’s Zurich Classic. One of the Tour’s most consistent performers, it’s perhaps unfair his lone victory came at the 2015 RSM Classic — a weak-field, below-the-radar fall event that gets little attention outside of southeast Georgia.

He won’t have that problem any longer.

After holding off hard-charging Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth, Kisner is your champion at the 2017 Dean & Deluca Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Buoyed by four back nine birdies and his always-reliable ballstriking, Kisner sealed the win with a steely par on the 18th. It’s his second career win on Tour, vaults him into the Top 10 in the FedExCup standings, and should place him firmly in the conversation for this fall’s Presidents Cup at Liberty National.

But, still, the story of the day surrounded two of the game’s youngest and brightest talents. A brilliant bogey-free Sunday 65 en route to a runner up finish should do quite a bit to squelch the IS HE SLUMPING??? narrative around Spieth. He’ll head to Erin Hills without a win since February, but with a good showing that should perhaps bode well at a course similar to the Chambers Bay setup where he won his second major championship title.

And then, well, there’s Jon Rahm. He’ll enter the world’s top 10 after yet another excellent showing. We can glow and proclaim him the Next Big Thing, or you can just watch this.

Rahm isn’t a future star — he’s one right now. And, perhaps, he’s second in line to be the favorite heading to Erin HIlls behind Dustin Johnson. There are few playing better anywhere in the world.

Here are the full results from Fort Worth.
