Stanford freshman Anna Wilson might seek additional year

0

Wilson, a Stanford freshman basketball player and the sister of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, entered school last fall with a heralded group of recruits.

[...] though classmates Nadia Fingall and DiJonai Carrington became regulars in the Cardinal rotation, Wilson played just 48 minutes in six games.

When the Pac-12 schedule started, she played five more games before a foot injury put her out for the rest of the season.

According to the NCAA hardship-waiver rule (12.8.4), an athlete can get another year of eligibility as long as she or he doesn’t take part in 30 percent of the team’s scheduled games.

The rule also stipulates that the season-ending injury or illness must occur in the first half of the regular season.

NCAA spokesman Christopher Radford said waivers are administered by conferences and that the Pac-12 could refer Wilson’s case to the NCAA for review.

“It’s a decision I don’t have to make for a long time,” she said in the locker room in Dallas after Stanford lost to South Carolina in the national semifinals on March 31.

The timing of her appearances puts her case in contrast to that of Reid Travis of the Stanford men’s team.

Because of a leg injury in the 2015-16 season, Travis played eight games, two more than Wilson, but all of them were in the first half.

The rule stipulates that a player can’t play in the second half of the season because, otherwise, a standout player might get an extra year even after returning from an injury to play in a few key conference games.
