California transfer Justin Pippen commits to Ohio State

By JAMES MADDEN

Ohio State landed a commitment from Justin Pippen, a California transfer and the son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen on Friday, 247Sports first reported. Pippen, a 6-foot-3 guard from Los Angeles, averaged 14.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game for the Bears this season.

Only a sophomore, Pippen was in his first season at Cal this year, after transferring from Michigan following his freshman season.

In a season where Cal hung around the bubble until the final stages of its season, Pippen was the Bears’ second-leading scorer and will bring an elite scorer to a backcourt that lost its leading scorer in Bruce Thornton.

Should Ohio State guard John Mobley Jr. return to school, Pippen and Mobley could form one of the most elite offensive backcourts in the Big Ten next season.

Pippen is head coach Jake Diebler’s first addition in the transfer portal, with the Buckeyes also heavily involved in the recruitment of BYU transfer Robert Wright III.
