7 Habits That Are Holding You Back as a Student-Athlete

0 4

Over the years working with players in our Head Start Basketball programs, I’ve noticed something important:

Success isn’t just about talent.

It’s about habits.

The best student-athletes consistently do a few things differently and just as importantly, they avoid certain behaviors that hold others back.

If you’re serious about improving on the court and in the classroom, take a look at these 7 habits that might be limiting your growth.

  1. Staying in Your Comfort Zone

Average players stay where they’re comfortable.

Successful student-athletes don’t.

They:

  • Play against better competition
  • Work on skills they struggle with
  • Take challenging classes
  • Put themselves in situations where they might fail

Growth only happens when you stretch beyond what you can currently do.

If everything feels easy, you’re probably not improving.

  1. Procrastinating

“I’ll start tomorrow.”

That’s one of the most dangerous habits a student-athlete can have.

  • You’ll work harder…tomorrow
  • You’ll study more…tomorrow
  • You’ll fix your habits…tomorrow

The problem?

Tomorrow rarely comes.

Top performers understand something simple:

The best time to start is now.

Even small actions today create momentum that leads to bigger changes over time.

  1. Avoiding Feedback

Great players want to be coached.

They:

  • Ask questions
  • Accept correction
  • Seek out ways to improve

Average players tend to avoid situations where they might be criticized.

But here’s the reality:

Feedback is one of the fastest ways to improve.

Modern player development continues to emphasize film study, accountability, and real-time coaching feedback as key drivers of growth.

If you’re not open to being coached, you’re limiting your ceiling.

  1. Thinking Negatively

Your mindset matters more than you think.

Successful student-athletes:

  • Believe they can improve
  • Stay focused through adversity
  • View challenges as opportunities

Players who constantly think:

  • “I’m not good enough”
  • “I’ll never get there”

…often stop themselves before they even get started.

Confidence isn’t about being perfect, it’s about believing you can get better.

  1. Wasting Time on Your Phone or TV

This is one of the biggest challenges for today’s athletes.

Phones, social media, and streaming can easily take up hours every day.

Successful student-athletes are intentional with their time.

They replace screen time with:

  • Skill work
  • Strength training
  • Studying
  • Reading
  • Recovery (sleep, stretching)

New Reality:
Studies continue to show that excessive screen time can negatively impact:

  • Sleep quality
  • Focus
  • Academic performance
  • Athletic recovery

Time is one of your biggest advantages or your biggest weakness.

Use it wisely.

  1. Poor Nutrition Habits

You can’t perform at a high level if you don’t fuel your body properly.

Average habits:

  • Fast food multiple times per week
  • Sugary drinks
  • Inconsistent meals

Successful student-athletes focus on:

  • Hydration
  • Balanced meals (protein, carbs, healthy fats)
  • Consistent eating habits

Modern sports performance has made one thing very clear:

Nutrition directly impacts energy, recovery, and performance.

If you don’t take care of your body, it will show up in your game.

  1. Being Around the Wrong People

Who you spend time with matters…a lot.

Successful student-athletes surround themselves with people who:

  • Work hard
  • Stay positive
  • Have goals
  • Want to improve

If you’re constantly around people who:

  • Make excuses
  • Avoid effort
  • Think negatively

…it’s going to affect you.

You don’t have to cut people off completely, but you do need to be intentional about your environment.

Final Thought

Here’s the truth:

You don’t become a successful student-athlete overnight.

You become one through daily habits.

Start by eliminating the habits that are holding you back and replacing them with ones that move you forward.

Will this guarantee a college scholarship or a professional career?

No.

But I can tell you this with complete confidence:

Keeping these habits will guarantee you never reach your full potential.

Championship players don’t just have talent.

They have championship habits.
