Michigan lands 5-star guard Brandon McCoy Jr. on same night it reaches NCAA championship game

By ADAM ZAGORIA

INDIANAPOLIS — It was a double-dose of good new for Dusty May and Michigan on Saturday night.

Not only did the Wolverines advance to the NCAA championship game with a 91-73 beatdown of Arizona, they also landed a commitment from five-star Sierra Canyon (CA) shooting guard Brandon McCoy.

Ranked the No. 2 shooting guard in the Class of 2026, McCoy chose the Wolverines over Arkansas, Miami and Alabama.

“McCoy is a big playmaker who sets the pace with his speed and ball-handling on offense, and his high-level lateral quickness is a factor on the defensive end,” ESPN’s Paul Biancardi told ZAGSBLOG. “He is not locked in to one spot on the floor.

“He demonstrates great anticipation and instincts in the passing lanes and when he’s in rotation.

“On top of his defense, he’s also an effective rebounder and he has the versatility to grab it and go the length of the court.

“However his shooting and free throw shooting needs to improve in the off season.

“He contributes in ways that are seen both in the stat sheet and in other ways that coaches value.

“Right now he is projected to with Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.”

Former “Fab Five” star Jalen Rose watched McCoy during the recent McDonald’s All-American Game and said he was going to talk to him about his college decision.

“I need to go talk to him and get this done,” he said. “….We might need him against Arizona.”

Turns out they didn’t.
