Raptors re-sign Chris Paul, say “oops” on waiving him earlier in season

0 1

It took five games without Immanuel Quickley for the Toronto Raptors to decide that point guards are important. And only a month and a half after waiving Chris Paul, the Raptors decided that he was the right man for the job after all.

“Yeah, that was our bad,” said an unnamed source within the front office. “We saw the Clippers’ tenure and though, ‘you know, maybe not for us.’ But then the last few days, I was going through his Basketball Reference page, and I was like, ‘holy cow, did you know this guy averaged 19 and 10 like seven times?’ In 2026 numbers that’s basically 35 and 20. I thought, ‘we should give this guy a chance.'”

Chris Paul did indeed have a legendary career. He is the only player in NBA history to reach career averages of 16.8 points, 9.2 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He didn’t turn the ball over from 2008 to 2013, and he once made 413 consecutive elbow jumpers. He averaged 2.9 points and 3.3 assists per game this season, but the Raptors are betting that he still has something in the tank for the stretch run.

In a sense, the Raptors played this intelligently. Because they waived him in February, he will be eligible to play in the playoffs. And his 149 career playoff games are far more than the total career playoff games from every other Raptor combined. The hope is that he still has a trick up his sleeve. Perhaps two.

“Free throws,” said an unnamed source on the coaching staff. “That’s what we think he can bring us. Ball movement. And oh man does he have to teach Scottie how to sell a foul. He didn’t have time in his last tenure to get to that day of class, but we’re hoping that we have enough time before the playoffs for Scottie to learn that last one. He’s gonna be learning from the best, that’s for sure.”

Oh, it’s April 1? Right. Happy April Fools’ Day!
