Will Wade on NC State: ‘They’re pretty mad for a coach they didn’t think was very good’

LSU introduced new head coach Will Wade on Monday, days following his departure from NC State after one season in Raleigh to return to LSU for his second stint with the Tigers. Wade coached at LSU from 2017-2022 before being fired for recruiting violations. Since 2022, he spent two seasons at McNeese and this past season at NC State, but jumped ship to Baton Rouge last week following the Tigers’ parting of ways with Matt McMahon.

Wade was asked about his short tenure at NC State and his reaction to its criticism of him over the last few days.

“I think some of the things have been mischaracterized on how I left, but I’m not gonna get into a back-and-forth,” Wade said Monday. “The people who need to know, know. When there’s a situation like this, everybody has to cover, let’s put it that way. I’m at peace with how I left… Look, they’re pretty mad for a coach they didn’t think was very good.”

In his lone season at NC State, Wade led the Wolfpack to the NCAA Tournament and was eliminated by Texas in the First Four in Dayton.

Wade’s move to return to LSU is his sixth different stint as a head coach and his second with the Tigers. In his previous five seasons at LSU, Wade went 105-51, making three NCAA Tournament and reaching as deep as the Sweet Sixteen.
