Arizona State parts ways with head coach Bobby Hurley
By JAMES MADDEN
Arizona State has officially parted ways with head coach Bobby Hurley at the end of its season, the school announced Wednesday.
Hurley, the older brother of UConn head coach Dan Hurley, spent 11 seasons with the Sun Devils and had a 185-167 overall record. The Sun Devils were hammered by Iowa State, 91-42, in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament Wednesday.
“Bobby Hurley has made incredible contributions to the sport of basketball, and that certainly includes many memorable moments during his time as our head coach,” Arizona State athletic director Graham Rossini said in a statement. “While we will not be extending his contract, we are so grateful for the 11 years that Coach, Leslie, Cameron, Sydney, Bobby Jr., and he spent with us at ASU. We wish Coach well moving forward and we are thankful for his leadership while at ASU.”
In his final season in Tempe, Arizona State finished the regular season 17-16 (7-11 Big 12), leading Hurley to be critical of the home game environment in Tempe earlier this season.
”We haven’t played well (at home) in years. Like, since before COVID… It’s a sterile environment,” Hurley said after a home loss to West Virginia in January. “We don’t win here. It’s not a home-court advantage… It’s hard to see a lot of light at the end of the tunnel.”
He proceeded to call the home environment “sterile” after the Sun Devils have struggled mightily in home games in recent seasons.
“The schedule has something to do with it, let’s call it what it is,” he said. “Sending a team to BYU and getting one home game and two more games against our rival and like one of the best teams in the country all on the road, I mean that’s just ridiculous. So all these factors matter in someway.”
Hurley was in the final year of his contract after receiving a contract extension in 2023.
Some top names that have been mentioned as potential candidates include Saint Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett, New Mexico head coach Eric Olen and Utah State head coach Jerod Calhoun.
