UConn’s Dan Hurley reacts to ejection after loss: ‘I don’t think I bumped the ref’

UConn’s strong regular season has ended in frustration.
Head coach Dan Hurley was ejected in the final seconds of the upset loss to Marquette on Saturday after a furious tirade following a no-call on Silas Demary’s drive to the basket UConn’s final possession. Hurley then seemingly made contact with official John Gaffney at the end of the game.
“I don’t think I bumped the ref,” Hurley told reporters following the 68-62 loss, per Dave Borges. “I thought I got close to yelling at John. If John thinks I bumped him, he’ll say I bumped him. I think I yelled into the back of his head, ‘Foul! Foul!'”
The Big East is reviewing the situation and Hurley could face further punishment with the Big East Tournament set to begin this week.
ESPN’s Stephen A Smith chimed in on the ejection.
UConn’s loss drops them to 17-3 in BIG EAST play which means they finish as the No. 2 seed in the conference under St. John’s.
This loss may also have implications for the NCAA Tournament as the defending champion Florida Gators could sneak in as a No. 1 seed over the Huskies.
It remains to be seen if Hurley’s ejection will result in further disciplinary action by the BIG EAST.
The BIG EAST Tournament begins on Wednesday, March 11.
