Prep honors: MCAL unveils all-league for basketball, soccer
Two players who hit major career scoring milestones on the basketball court this season were honored as the players of the year in the MCAL. Meanwhile, the top honorees in soccer both came from the league champions.
Redwood High senior Kitty White, a two-time All-MCAL first team pick, was named the MCAL girls basketball player of the year. White finished her career with more than 1,500 points as she led the Giants to the MCAL crown,
The Branson School’s NJ Gray passed the 1,000-point mark this season as he led the Bulls (19-16, 7-2 MCAL) to a tie for third place in the regular season. The Bulls, seeded third, lost to Marin Catholic in the MCAL title game.
Defender Mateo Hale anchored the back line for the Tam boys soccer team as the Red-tailed Hawks conceded just five goals while going 6-0-2 in league play. Three of those goals came against Archie Williams in a game Tam won 4-3.
The Branson girls also went unbeaten during a 7-0-1 league campaign, adding the MCAL postseason title to their haul. Julia Myerberg led the league in assists (7) and points (19) while finishing second in goals from her midfield position to lead the way.
Boys basketball
Senior Joe Hammond helped lead Marin Catholic (24-5, 7-1) to the MCAL championship and a berth in the North Coast Section Open Division. Hammond, who directed the team’s offense, led the Wildcats with three assists per game.
A pair of high-scoring stars from Archie Williams High — Meezy Butler and Brian Wright — helped the Peregrine Falcons to the second seed for the MCAL tournament. San Rafael surged toward the end of the regular season behind Luke Shapiro to earn a spot in the league playoffs. San Marin missed out on the MCAL playoffs, but is in pursuit of a State title with senior leader Miller Morgan in the spotlight.
In the BCL West, dominating San Domenico senior center Oskaras Valiauga represented the Panthers on the all-league first team.
Girls basketball
Redwood led the league with two first-team picks, with Brooke Denler being honored for the second year in a row. She is joined by Hindi Copeland, earning her first all-league nod.
Cece Biernat, an MCAL honorable mention on last year’s Marin Catholic state championship team, picked up first-team honors this year, joined by San Marin’s Abby Bartholo and Branson’s Kate Spaulding.
Marin Academy sophomore Penelope Lee was named to the all-league first team in the BCL West after leading the resurgent Wildcats (19-13, 4-6 BCL) back to the league playoffs after a one-year absence and into the second round of the NorCal playoffs.
Boys soccer
Tam tied for top honors with four first-team selections – sophomore forward Marco Caruso, midfielders Cole Soto and Luke Nurney, plus defender John Millette. Caruso was the team’s top scorer, netting hat trick against MC and Archie Williams and a foul-goal game against TL.
San Rafael also netted four selections en route to a second-place finish – the Bulldogs’ best in a number of years. Forward Dylan Maldonaldo, midfielder Joey Navarrete, plus defenders Frisly Reyes Rodas and Rayley Cauich led the way.
Archie Williams finished fourth in league but went on a run to claim the postseason title. The Peregrine Falcons placed forward Sean Chamberlin, the 2025 player of the year, and defender Isaac Terry on the first team.
Rounding out the first team was Terra Linda goalie Jesse “Pono” Rodriguez and Redwood midfielder Ryder Clark.
In the BCL West, Marin Academy and San Domenico each placed one player on the first team – defender Tom Downie and midfielder Gui Guioto, respectively. Guioto was co-MVP of the league in 2025.
Girls soccer
Despite winning the league, Branson only placed two players on the first team after Myerberg claimed the top honor. Sophomore forward Luna Diaz (five goals) and defender Ava Grevelding made the cut.
Second-place Redwood put a league-high three players on the first team with midfielder Teagan McCormick (two goals, three assists), defender Holly Thomas, and goalie Evie Dickerson (league-high six shutouts).
Marin Catholic, which placed third and is still in the hunt for a Division IV state title, saw Siena White selected as a midfielder (three goals, two assists) and Savannah Browne as a defender.
Tam also placed two players on the list with forward Lauren Willard (four goals, three assists) and midfielder Clio Kunz.
The remaining selections were San Marin sophomore forward Tatum D’Angelica (league-high seven goals), San Rafael freshman midfielder Stefani Brandt (three goals), and Terra Linda defender Remi David.
BCL West champion Marin Academy had three first-team selections – forward Reese Goodenough, midfielder Sadie Goodenough, and defender Stephanie Zola.
San Domenico defender Abby Silver was also a first-team selection.
