Sports Briefs: San Rafael tops Novato in MCAL boys basketball preview

The junior trio of Wyatt Tornello, Jax Aguillon and Kannon Wood each had big games to lead San Rafael to a 67-57 non-league boys basketball win over Novato on Tuesday night.

Tornello led the way with 22 points and 13 rebounds, including nine points in the fourth quarter. Aguillon also registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards, sinking five free throws to put the game away in the fourth. Wood nailed three triples on his way to 13 points. The Bulldogs (11-7) open MCAL play against Archie Williams on Friday.

Chris Touissant and Padon Coleman combined for 38 points for the Hornets, who open MCAL play on Friday against Branson.

  • Marin Catholic rolls into MCAL play with an eight-game streak after Tuesday’s 85-54 victory over traditional rival Justin-Siena in a non-league contest. The Wildcats (13-2) are scheduled to play San Marin in Friday’s league opener.
  • San Marin fell 55-52 to St. Joseph Notre Dame on Tuesday night. The Mustangs (9-7) are scheduled to play Marin Catholic on Friday.
  • Tam High is riding a three-game win streak after Tuesday’s 60-49 road victory over Rancho Cotate. The Red-tailed Hawks (8-8) are scheduled to play Redwood in Friday’s MCAL opener.
  • The Branson School edged University, 72-64, in Tuesday’s non-league tilt in San Francisco. The Bulls (5-9) are scheduled to open MCAL play against Novato on Friday. The Red Devils (10-4), who are ranked No. 5 in the North Coast Section, are 2-2 against MCAL teams with wins over Redwood and San Rafael.
