NEW YORK–The drama in the first game of the Jimmy V Classic was fitting of the World’s Most Famous Arena.

BYU, led by star freshman AJ Dybantsa, walked off the court at Madison Square Garden with a win at the buzzer on Tuesday night, thanks to a buzzer beating three by Rob Wright III.

“You got to have trust in your teammates, it don’t matter what the play is it don’t matter if I had 50 that game, whoever is open is going to get the ball.” Dybantsa said about giving Wright the final shot. “That’s the kind of trust we have in our team so they decided to double me he’s going to shoot 45% from three, I’m going to take that.”

Dybantsa finished the game with 28 points, including 22 second half points, on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor as BYU won a 67-64 contest against Clemson.

“One thing about AJ that he does a good job of is that he’s really a fast processer,” BYU head coach Kevin Young said. “So I thought in the second half he made needed adjustments where he could get to his spots a little bit more and I think the game opened up from that standpoint.”

BYU trailed by as many as 22 points in the first half. But a late comeback was capped off by Wright’s walk off shot.

“I’ve never had a buzzer beating three so that was the first one,” Wright said. “AJ wasn’t open he was getting double-teamed so I told [Mihalo Boskovic] I would be coming back to the ball and he just trusted to me and passed it to me and the shot went in.”

Wright finished the game with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
