Basketball Legend Lawrence Moten Found Dead at Home at Age 53
Syracuse basketball legend Lawrence Moten has been found dead at home at the age of 53.
How did Moten die? What was his cause of death? That is not yet clear. However,Syracuse.com confirmed Moten's death, calling him "one of the greatest players in Syracuse basketball history."
Lawrence Moten's Daughter, Lawrencia, Confirmed His Death, Reports Say
According to the Syracuse site, Moten's death was confirmed by his daughter, Lawrencia, on September 30. Lawrence Moten was found "dead in his Washington D.C. home" earlier in the day on September 30. Syracuse.com noted that Moten had recently taken a job as "general manager for the boys and girls basketball teams at Digital Pioneers Academy."

Moten was active on Instagram, but he hadn't posted there since spring 2025.

Lawrence Moten Was the 'All-Time Leading Scorer' in the History of Syracuse University
According to Gallaudet University, where he was an assistant coach, Moten:
- Was a Washington, D.C., native who "attended Archbishop Carroll High School before attending Syracuse University."
- Played four seasons at Syracuse "for legendary men's basketball head coach Jim Boeheim."
- At Syracuse (1991-95), Moten "became the all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,334 points and the all-time leading scorer in Big East Conference history with 1,405 points."
- He "averaged 19.3 points per game, 4.9 rebounds per game and 2.4 assists per game during his four-year collegiate career. He scored double figures in 118 of 121 games played."
- Moten "is the only player to score 500 or more points in four consecutive collegiate seasons. Moten graduated from Syracuse in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in human development," Gallaudet wrote.
