EMPORIA (KSNT) - Kansas seniors will be dressed in 1920s-style uniforms while they compete in the Granny Basketball tournament happening in Emporia this weekend.
The two-day tournament will run from Sept. 13-14 and see seniors from Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas go head-to-head at the Emporia State Recreation Center. Pool games start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 and bracket play begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14 with the championship game at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday.
“We are excited to be hosting the teams this year,” said Michele Clark, director of the Granny Basketball league. “It will truly be a showcase of what Granny Basketball is all about – with a range of skills and talent, as well as age.”
All players will dress in 1920s-inspired uniforms that consist of black bloomers, middy blouses and sailor-style collars that display each player’s number. Participants will also have colorful knee socks showing off the team colors.
The Granny Basketball league was started in 2005 and has 55 teams across 11 states and Canada. The Kansas teams are located in Lawrence, Olathe, Kansas City, Wichita, Derby, Emporia and Louisburg.
“Last year’s championship team is making the trip from Texas. Waco Six Shooters is going for a back-to-back-to-back championship,” said Teresa Miller, deputy director of the Granny Basketball League.
Granny Basketball welcomes the addition of new players and teams, as well as volunteers who can help with coaching, refereeing or scorekeeping. You can learn more about how to participate by clicking here.
