Brotherhood Draft Watch: Brian Scalabrine On “Discovering” Cooper Flagg
Quite a story really.
Brian Scalabrine was one of the first significant guys in the basketball world to realize that Cooper Flagg was special.
In this video, he talks about getting a call from Matt McKinsey, who at the time (we don’t know if he still is) was Flagg’s trainer. He said that he had a 13-year-old kid who could play with the kids at the University of Maine.
What Scalabrine said about Flagg was that he was just amazed by his ability to process the game. He says that you can tell him something to incorporate into his game and Flagg does it almost immediately.
He also compares him to LeBron James in terms of just how fast he learns and applies lessons.
And by the way when he asked Kelly Flagg what he could do to help, she said Cooper would love to go to Duke, so Scalabrine said he’d call Jon Scheyer. Love it!
Anyway, it sort of underscores, again, the gap between what people who make a living in basketball and people who make a living writing about basketball think of Flagg. It’s probably best to stick with the professionals.
