Under Jon Scheyer’s Leadership, Duke Basketball Is Solid Academically
One more sign that the program is in good hands
Duke released some good news on Wednesday, revealing that the men’s basketball team turned in a collective 3.43 GPA in the spring semester. And for Scheyer’s collective time at Duke, his teams have posted a 3.29 GPA.
That’s a B average which is very respectable.
It comes just as we learn an interesting if not entirely exact point of comparison: former UNC coach Mack Brown revealed that one of the concessions to new coach Bill Belichick is to lower academic requirements for football.
In a SiriusXM interview, Brown made these comments: “As far as North Carolina and Bill Belichick now, he’s arguably the best coach ever. They’ve committed money to it. They’ve helped him with academics. They’ve lowered those standards some. So there’s absolutely no reason they shouldn’t be successful. And anymore, they’ve changed the roster... So you’ve got a chance to succeed at the highest level, and I expect him to do that and I’m proud for him.”
Given UNC’s academic fraud scandal, lowering academic standards - presumably this means admissions but we know now how hard it is to flunk out at Chapel Hill - is probably not the best move.
All things considered, we prefer Duke’s approach.
