What did I just watch?

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers answered the bell for 47 minutes despite being shorthanded. They played phenomenal defense. Controlled the glass. Won the battle inside. But then coughed it all up in the 48th minute.

I can’t believe what just happened. Even writing down these events now, it seems improbable. The outcome should be different then it is. It’s like a car crash that you see coming from a mile away, but there’s nothing you can do to avoid it.

Max Strus hit a three to give the Cavs a 117-110 lead with 1:06 in the fourth. This should’ve been enough to close the game, but it wasn’t.

Tyrerse Haliburton made a quick two. Donovan Mitchell was fouled and made both free throws.

Still, a seven-point game with 58 seconds left. This is supposed to be an easy win.

Aaron Nesmith had a putback dunk off two missed Pascal Siakam free throws.

Five-point game with 48 seconds left. Everything is still fine.

Mitchell got called for an offensive foul on the ensuing possession. Siakim responded with a quick layup.

Three-point game. Twenty-eight seconds left. Not ideal, but it could be worse.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson called a timeout because they couldn’t get the ball inbound.

The timeout didn’t do anything. Max Strus threw an errant pass intended for Ty Jerome.

Haliburton went inside, was fouled, and went to the line.

He made the first. Two-point game. Twelve seconds left.

Haliburton missed the second, but grabbed his own rebound. Then, he did the only thing the Cavs couldn’t allow to happen: he hit a dagger three over Jerome.

One second left. No timeouts. Down one. Ballgame.

120-119. Pacers win.

What did I just witness? How did we get here?

Just like that, the Cavs' magical 64-win season is hanging in the balance. They’re down 2-0, have multiple injuries, and are heading to Indianapolis.

Mitchell nearly did enough to will his team to victory, but 48 points, nine assists, and four steals couldn’t get it done. It didn’t help that the Cavs went just 11-39 from three. Their second straight game under 30% from distance.

Conversely, Indiana continues to hit their outside shots. They went 11-28 from three (39.3%). Including the only one that mattered.

Haliburton provided 19 points on top of his game-winner. Myles Turner finished with 23 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Nesmith had 23 points on 5-8 from three.

This was heartbreaking.

There’s nothing quite like the stunned silence of a home crowd that was so sure that they were going to see their team win.

Even now, as I’m writing this 20 minutes after Haliburton’s shot went in, there are people still sitting in their seats, in disbelief at just what happened.

The season isn’t over yet. Indiana still needs to win two more games. But wow, it certainly doesn’t feel like they need two more wins at this point.

How can the Cavs possibly pick up the pieces after this?
