YouTube Gold: How Maryland Got Buzz Williams
Interesting background stuff here
The whole Kevin-Willard-Maryland break up was pretty bizarre. Willard was upset about financial constraints from the athletic department and there were some accounts that, despite the Big Ten money, Maryland was broke - again.
Willard is now at Villanova, where football can’t compete with basketball and where his program will be at the center of the university’s public identity - so long as he wins, anyway.
After that whole situation erupted during the tournament, the relationship between Willard and Maryland, not to mention Maryland’s fans, deteriorated quickly and it was probably best that things just ended.
There was a lot of pressure for Maryland to hire a “Maryland man,” from Len Elmore and others, but ultimately the Terps brain trust opted for Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams and Williams is an interesting choice.
We got to know him at Virginia Tech of course and he’s done fairly well at A&M.
How did this happen and how will he do at Maryland?
Seth Emerson of The Athletic talks to Craig Hoffman about how it happened and what Maryland fans should expect.
One thing they absolutely should expect: that in about six years or so, Williams will start to look around. He’s made it clear that philosophically, he doesn’t think staying more than 5-6 years is smart. Basically, Williams has left his previous jobs after five or six years and given the merciless nature of Maryland fans, he may opt to boogie yet again before they turn on him as they have their last two coaches now.
