BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Becoming the first girls basketball state champion from Western New York in six seasons, Frewsburg has won the NYSPHSAA Class C title.

The Section VI champions won 59-44 against Stillwater from Section II on Friday night at Hudson Valley Community College, following Frewsburg's 69-45 win against Tuckahoe from Section I in Thursday's semifinal. State champions for the first time in team history, the Bears finished the season with a 21-5 record.

One more of WNY's girls basketball teams remains in contention for a state title as Lancaster will play in the Class AAA semifinals against Albertus Magnus from Section I on Saturday. Williamsville South lost 47-35 against Ardsley from Section I in Class A semifinal Friday.

Frewsburg became the first girls basketball state champion from Section VI since Franklinville won Class D in 2019. Williamsville South won Class A in 2015 and the most recent Class C champion was Chautauqua Lake in 2014.

In boys basketball, Panama will play in the Class D final against Bridgehampton from Section XI at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton on Saturday.
