Starpoint repeats in Class AA girls basketball

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Megan Milleville went from worrier to warrior at the bounce of a ball.

She barely slept before Saturday morning's Section VI Class AA girls basketball championship game, then struggled to stay awake on the early bus ride to Buffalo State Sports Arena. But once Milleville got her blood flowing, the senior center played a vital role in Starpoint's second consecutive championship conquest.

"Going in it, was nerve-wracking," Milleville said following Starpoint's 50-43 victory against North Tonawanda. "They say worrier or warrior. My friend Lily (McKie) is a warrior. She slept great last night. My friend Maddie (Schmidt) and I couldn't sleep. We were so nervous. Having this early game was tough. Just knowing you have to wake up and do it. But once we got on the floor and the game started, the adrenaline kicked in and the tiredness wore off. It was now or never."

Milleville had 14 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead a balanced Starpoint effort in overcoming North Tonawanda's sweet-shooting sisters Annabelle and Lily Day.

"I know the Day sisters from travel, and we knew they were having a great season," Milleville said. "But we knew we had a deeper bench, and as the game went on we had to trust our process.

"Everybody is telling me what a great game I had. But I'm just amazed by my teammates most of all. I'm so proud of them. I love them so much."

The consecutive titles in Class AA come after Starpoint had not won the section since 1995 as a B2 program.

"It’s huge for our program," Starpoint coach Megan Reed said. "It’s showing people that we are a basketball program. We took a long time to do it. And it's not just me."

"It means so much," Milleville said. "I was on the team when were 5-18 or something like that. To develop this team and leave our marks, all of the seniors together, it means so much. I’m really proud of what we’ve done for Starpoint. I love our school so much."
