Prep Basketball: Redwood girls advance behind Saibel’s big night

Maya Saibel hit six three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points as the Redwood High girls basketball team went on the road and pulled off a first-round upset, taking down Lincoln 66-52 in the NorCal Division II playoffs on Tuesday night.

The No. 13 Giants (24-9) outscored No. 4 Lincoln 16-7 in the fourth quarter to break open a close game. Redwood moves on to Thursday’s quarterfinals with another road game against No. 5 California of San Ramon (22-11) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Brooke Denler added 15 points for the Giants. Kitty White and Drew Schultz scored eight points apiece. White also pulled down 13 rebounds.

Boys basketball

NJ Gray poured in a team-high 21 points and The Branson School took No. 6 Archbishop Mitty down to the wire in Tuesday’s 59-55 loss in the opening round of the NorCal Division II playoffs. The No. 11 Bulls (21-11) tied the game 52-52 inside the final 4 minutes before Mitty sprinted to the finish. Heath French finished with 15 points and Tyler Wells added nine for Branson. Mitty will take on No. 3 Jesuit on Thursday.

• Redwood senior Semetri Carr, headed on a Division I scholarship to Cal, stole the spotlight with a 38-point night, but the ninth-seeded Giants (22-8) could not get past No. 8 Oakland Tech in a 71-57 road loss during Tuesday’s opening round of the NorCal D-I tournament. Oakland Tech’s Ardarius Grayson finished with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second quarter. The Bulldogs (24-5) advance to face top-seeded Inderkum in the second round.
