Hubert Davis’s extension has not gone over well with everyone.

In Tuesday’s ACC Action, Georgia Tech escaped Pitt 73-67 and Louisville slipped by Virginia Tech 71-66.

What else can you say about Georgia Tech at this point? They’ve really been up against it with injuries and somehow they keep competing.

Against Pitt, Tech had eight players available for a change, but Ryan Mutombo only played two minutes and they got no points and only one rebound from their bench although Jaeden Mustaf did have three assists in 24 minutes.

Additionally Ibrahim Souare started but also didn’t score. Tech did shoot 25-28 from the foul line which was ultimately enough.

Baye Ndongo shot just 2-6 but hit 7-8 from the line and also grabbed an impressive 17 rebounds.

Jaland Lowe did his best, with 25 points and eight assists, but it wasn’t enough.

Pitt had some chances to come back late but couldn’t get a basket. With the loss, the Panthers, a team that once had a solid shot at an NCAA bid, falls to 16-12.

Louisville shot out to a big early lead, going up 16-3. But the Hokies rallied, and were soon down just 20-17. The Cardinals pulled away again and it took the Hokies a while to catch up, which they did at 53-53 with 10:32 to play. Louisville pulled away again, slightly, and Virginia Tech nearly caught up again, down just 67-66 with 1:49 left to play.

Couldn’t close the deal ultimately but props for heart. Turnovers killed the Hokies, and it’s not the first time. Mike Young has bemoaned his team’s carelessness before and they had 22 here. Three players had four. That’s pretty damaging.

One of them was Brandon Rechsteiner, who led the team with 18 points and also had five rebounds and four assists. Former Duke Blue Devil Jaden Schutt, who has struggled with illness, was 0-3 in 22 minutes.

Off the court news: UNC has announced that Hubert Davis has received an extension. Strangely, while it was agreed to over the summer and signed in December, it was not announced until Tuesday. Interestingly, it was signed on the day UNC lost to Alabama.

UNC said it was an oversight. Well, if you say so.

Davis gets a major raise, going from $400,000 to $1.25 million. He also gets “supplemental” income and that goes up $100K every year.

The deal runs through 2030.

Ol’ Roy Williams came out the other day and firmly defended his hand-picked successor, but this has not gone over well with everyone. A number of UNC fans are restless, given the up-and-down nature of Davis’s program. The Tar Heels have picked up lately but still have no guarantee of making the NCAA tournament.

The real question of course is this: what is the buyout?

Continuing with the theme of pissing off Tar Heel partisans, a number of former players don’t want UNC to tear down the Dean Dome and build a new barn at a different site.

For a good time, go over to X and look up IC Meltdown. It’s always entertaining when things are not going well at UNC.

Finally, UNC’s plan to have a GM and to depart from Dean Smith’s path a bit further is taking shape: agent and UNC grad Jim Tanner has been signed to a million dollar contract. He’s planning to build a college version of an NBA front office.

Five games on tap for Wednesday as Notre Dame visits Clemson, NC State goes to Syracuse, Virginia is off to Wake Forest, BC is on its West Coast swing at Stanford and SMU is at Cal.

We can’t explain why but Clemson-Notre Dame gives off shocking upset vibes, but that’s probably wrong or just wishful thinking. Otherwise, we like Wake over Virginia, Stanford over BC and SMU over Cal.

What’s that? We missed one?

Oh yeah. That’s probably because at 11-16 (NCSU) and 11-17 (Syracuse), both teams are pretty irrelevant. Make us care!
