Indiana Coaching Search Could Take An Interesting Turn

As Clemson’s Brad Brownell’s name emerges

We saw a story Saturday that said that Duke assistant Jai Lucas was going to be the next Miami coach. As the evening went on, other sources, notably ESPN, said it was not yet confirmed.

Still, it puts the coaching carousel back into the middle of things and no job is more interesting right now than Indiana.

This article from The Daily Hoosier lists a number of interesting candidates and, somewhat to our surprise, puts Clemson’s Brad Brownell at the top of the list.

Could he handle it? Absolutely. We just didn’t think they’d be looking at a guy at Clemson.

We’d rather he stay there but IU is a hard job to turn down. If he does leave, we hope the Tigers go after Samford’s Bucky McMillan.

Mick Cronin, who seems to hate UCLA as a Big Ten team because of the travel, is a logical target for a lot of schools. Then they list Baylor’s Scott Drew, who has Indiana ties since his dad coached at Valparaiso. Texas Tech’s Grant McCasland is on the list as it TJ Otzelberger of Iowa State.

We’re glad to see Ben McCollum getting some buzz and IU grad and former coach (briefly) Dan Dakich is high on him. Finally, before getting into secondary candidates, Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams is mentioned.

Also listed in varying levels of interest/possibility, with most of these being a stretch:

  • Chris Beard
  • Mark Byington
  • Former Duke star and assistant coach Chris Collins
  • Todd Golden
  • Chris Jans
  • Greg McDermott
  • Pat Kelsey
  • Tommy Lloyd
  • Bucky McMillian
  • Porter Moser
  • Nate Oats
  • Bruce Pearl
